Before I even get into the pros and cons of using either, I want to recommend that if it is at all possible for you to learn to use HTML or an HTML editor, by all means do so. You will have a lot more freedom with what you can do online, if you can use HTML or use an HTML editor.
If you do choose to go the site builder route, recognize that if you are going to be long term successful online, that you will probably eventually choose to learn to use HTML or an HTML editor.
So what is HTML? It stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, and is basically a computer language that is generally used to create web pages.
Although it can be quite daunting to look at if you have never programmed before, it is a quite straightforward language, meaning that it is pretty simple and can be learned quite easily.
Now, an HTML editor is a software program that basically allows you to use regular typing and a menu driven command center. This makes using HTML a lot easier, and although you should become familiar with HTML over time, so you can make minor adjustments to the code when you choose to, you do not have to know any HTML to begin to use the editors. I personally use Microsoft FrontPage because it is quite simple to use and the menus operate very much like Microsoft Word, so it was quite easy for me to learn. Many webmasters prefer Dreamweaver because it is not as limited as FrontPage, but for my needs, I am quite satisfied with FrontPage.
So what are the advantages to using a site builder program?
Well, first off, a site builder program allows you to use preprogrammed templates and input information to those templates, and then upload those templates to your web site.
The key advantage is that you do not have to have any programming skills at all, nor any understanding of how HTML or even basic programming works.
The disadvantage is that you are severely limited in what you can do with those pages and how you can customize them. Although you might be able to get by with site built pages when you first get started online, if you are serious about making money online you will probably need to learn to use HTML or an HTML editor.
Of course, you always have the option of being able to outsource your programming needs, hiring a web programmer to do the work for you.
