Writing – How to Number the Pages and Chapters of a FrameMaker Document?

FrameMaker has a very detailed and sophisticated numbering functionality rarely found in any other page-design software.

With your document open, select Format > Document > Numbering to display the NUMBERING PROPERTIES dialog box.

In the CHAPTER tab, type in the CHAPTER number and select a FORMAT from the drop-down list (Arabic, roman, alphabetic, etc.).

You have two other choices – “Continue numbering from previous file in book” (if you have created a book file and this document is a part of that book file) and “Use same number as previous file.”

Click the PAGE tab, type in the number of the FIRST PAGE and select a FORMAT from the drop-down list (Arabic, roman, alphabetic, etc.).

Another choice for a page number is “Continue numbering from previous page in book” (if you have created a book file and this document is a part of that book file).

Click the PARAGRAPH tab and either select the “Restart paragraph numbering” or the “Continue numbering from previous paragraph in book” (if you have created a book file and this document is a part of that book file).

Click the FOOTNOTE tab and enter the number of the FIRST FOOTNOTE and select a NUMERIC FORMAT from the drop-down list.

Or, if you do not want consecutively numbered footnotes, select “”Start over on each page” and select a NUMERIC FORMAT from the drop-down list.

Your other choice is to select “Continue numbering from previous footnote in book” (if you have created a book file and this document is a part of that book file).

Click the TABLE FOOTNOTE tab and select a numbering format from the drop-down list.

Finally, click the VOLUME TAB and either enter a volume number directly into the VOLUME field, and then select a numbering format from the drop-down list, or select “Continue numbering from previous file in book” (if you have created a book file and this document is a part of that book file), or select “Use same number as previous file.”
