Why You Should Learn HTML Part I

There are several reasons why you should learn HTML, but before we discuss these it is important to understand what HTML is.

HTML is not, as many people believe, a computer language. Even though it is short for Hypertext Markup Language, it is no more than a means of formatting and to use the term ‘language’ for it is to provide it with a dignity that it does not deserve. It uses formatting tags in much the same way as the old word processors used control codes to format text. The reason it cannot be accepted as a language is that it is your own written language that is used, and all it does is to provide instructions as to how that language is displayed on the page.

However, it is splitting hairs as to whether HTML is a language or a formatting system. If you want to make money from internet marketing, rather than just play at it, you need your own website. Once you have that you will require a means of designing and adding test to your pages. That is what HTML does.

In fact, it does a bit more than that, in that it is used to design the website itself. However, the nearest most people get to website design is to fill in the blanks on templates. With the search engines placing more emphasis on content, however, it is becoming increasingly more important that your web pages be refreshed regularly.

Most people are more interested in their home page that any of their internal pages, but even there the content must change occasionally or it will slowly lose listing position. In order to make these changes it is frequently necessary to have knowledge of HTML. Depending on your web host, and the editing facilities provided, you might have a wysiwyg HTML editor that you can use to edit the main body text. If not however, you will have to edit the HTML.

This might involve no more than simply adding text to that existing, without any further formatting being required. However, if you want add another table or to format the text in some way, such as italicizing or bolding it, then you will have to employ the relevant HTML tags:

to italicize text like this use the emphasis tag<em>surround the <b>text</b> with the tag like this</em>

To make your text bold use
<b>or <strong>like this<strong>here the strong tag surrounds the <b>text</b>.</strong> <b>And this shows the bold tag</b>
